News & Press ReleasesPress Release - Tony Wright
TONY WRIGHT - LIBERAL VANNIN CANDIDATE THE PARTY IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE ITS FIRST PROSPECTIVE PARLIAMENTARY CANDIDATE FOR THE NOVEMBER GENERAL ELECTION. TONY WRIGHT IS A PORT ERIN COMMISSIONER AND WILL BE STANDING FOR THE RUSHEN CONSTITUENTCY IN THE NOVEMBER GENERAL ELECTION. TONY STATES THAT HE WANTS TO BE A LIBERAL VANNIN MHK SO THAT HE CAN BE AN ACTIVE PART OF THE IMPORTANT CHANGES TO THE MANX POLITICAL SCENE THAT ARE SO DESPERATELY NEEDED. AS PART OF THE LIBERAL VANNIN PARLIAMENTARY PARTY HE WANTS TO END THE EXTRAVAGENT AND UNACCOUNTABLE PUBLIC SPENDING THAT THE ISLAND HAS BEEN SUFFERING FROM FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS AND TO BRING BACK DEMOCRATIC ACCOUNTABILITY AND AUDIT TO GOVERNMENT. HE STATES THAT THE NEXT FIVE YEARS ARE GOING TO BE PIVOTAL FOR THE FUTURE PROSPECTS OF THE ISLANDS ECONOMY AND THE PEOPLE NEED TO HAVE THEIR GOVERNMENT ACTING AT ALL TIMES IN THEIR BEST INTERESTS AND NOT IN SELF INTEREST GROUPS. He believes that the Island needs a more open and accountable system of Government. There seems to be in existence, a legislative culture of secrecy and exclusivity regarding some of the major decisions that have been made. There are still parts of the User Agreement that are kept secret, as one example. The reluctance of Government to own up to mistakes and accept the responsibility for actions that have occurred has not gone down well with the electorate of the Island. He also feels that the time is right for some radical reforms in the political area. Tony firmly believes that each constituent of Rushen has individual needs and his/her own agenda and these will have to be addressed as they emerge; however there are general areas of the local scene that can be improved i.e. the provision of a comprehensive local health service at the Old Southlands building; the provision of a protected green belt park on the Ballakilley lands incorporating a BMX cycle track, a pitch and clubhouse for the Nomads, a skate park, children’s play area and a landscaped area for walking and sitting. (This land has to be protected from becoming yet another housing estate.); the re-generation of the inner areas of Port Erin and Port St. Mary; the development of a marina in the South and greater co-operation between the local government authorities in the case of housing and waste collection. He promises that individual constituents will be able to discuss their needs and problems with him on a personal level. He will maintain a highly visual presence in the constituency and will be approachable, empathetic and understanding. He states “I will help in any way that I can but I will not make any false promises nor pretend that I know all the answers. Only fairy godmothers have magic wands I’m afraid. But I do promise that I will be open, honest, direct and dependable in everything I do. I can promise no more than that.” He will not be seeking a ministerial post, as he believes that he will be able to serve the people of the Island in general and the people of Rushen in particular better from the floor of the House of Keys. Tony is setting up a Southern Branch of the Party and to this end he is calling a meeting to be held on Wednesday 16th August at the Station Hotel in Port Erin at 8pm. Everybody is welcome. The meeting is being held in order to recruit people who are interested in joining the party as activists or ordinary members, but there will be no obligation. This branch will work in conjunction with the Parliamentary Party to ensure that the interests of the people in the south of the Island are represented.
