Polling stations open until 8 o’clock tonight

Publication Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2008

Elections for six of the Island’s Local Authorities are taking place today.

Onchan, Braddan, Marown, Laxey and Ramsey are going to the polls.

So are the St George’s and Athol wards in Douglas.

Local Authorities set the rates for their districts and are involved in other things like rubbish collection, housing, planning and public facilities.

Because not enough candidates came forward in Bride, Patrick, Peel, Port Erin, Port St Mary and Rushen, those areas will have to hold by-elections.

The Department of Local Government and the Environment has been actively encouraging people to use their vote.

The Department of Education has also been working to get the message across to the 16 to 18 year olds who were given the right to vote in 2006.

Polling stations are open until 8 o’clock tonight.

Polling Stations:

Onchan - Onchan Youth and Community Centre.

Douglas - St George's Parish Centre, Upper Church Street and All Saints Church Hall, Alexander Drive

Marown - Old Church Road, Crosby.

Braddan - Port Soderick Hall and Braddan Commissioner's Office.

Ramsey - RamseyTown Hall and St Paul's Church Hall.
